Javier Calle-Martín holds an MA in English Language and Literature from the University of Málaga (1996). In 2001 he completed his PhD in English Linguistics with a dissertation on the edition of the Middle English version of The Craft of Nombrynge, written in the 15th century. In November 2002 he obtained a position as tenured Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) and in October 2018 he became Professor at the University of Málaga, where he has coordinated the research group Linguistic Change and Philological Editions of Historical Texts (CLEFT) in the period 1995-2022 and from 2023 he has been responsible for the new research group Variation in Time and Space (VaTS). Javier has held visiting positions at the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, Nottingham Trent University and Università degli studi di Trieste. He is also honorary research fellow at the University of Glasgow, where also held a visiting fellowship from the Caledonian Research Foundation – the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2006).
Javier has supervised the PhD dissertations of Nadia Obegi-Gallardo, Jesús Romero-Barranco, Miriam Criado-Peña and Juan Lorente-Sánchez, and is now supervising the dissertations of Marta Pacheco-Franco on orthographic variation from a diachronic and a diatopic perspective and of Sinéad Linehan-Gómez on the textual transmission of an Early Modern medical text housed in the Special Collections Department at the Wellcome Library.
Javier’s research interests are the History of the English Language and Manuscript Studies, late Middle English and early Modern English scientific manuscripts in particular. In the last few years, he has turned his attention to the standardisation processes in the period 1500-1900 and the connection between usage and prescription in late Modern English. In addition to this, he is also interested in the study of linguistic competition, both synchronically and diachronically, which has led him to explore particular instances of variation in the different varieties of English worldwide.
Teaching
Javier Calle-Martín is Professor of English at the University of Málaga, where he teaches History of the English Language (Old and Middle English) at undergraduate level and different post-graduate courses in the Master of English Studies at the University of Málaga on topics such as Manuscript Studies; Quantitative Linguistics; and Authorship Attribution.
In addition to this, Javier also teaches other post-graduate courses in other Spanish universities. He is responsible for the module “Medieval English and its Manuscripts” in the Online Master in English Studies (OMiES) at the University of Jaén and the module “Introduction to the Teaching and Learning of Languages Online” in the Master in Teaching and Learning Languages through Technology at the Universidad Oberta de Catalunya, where he has supervised a number of master dissertations.
Javier has also taught in the Master of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics at the University of Murcia, where he has been regularly invited to collaborate in the subject “History of the English Language: Texts and Research Tools”.
